Chris Spackman and the Sturminster Car Enthusiasts meeting

You may not have noticed but by pre COVID lockdown 2 there was a regular , well fairly regular, gathering of cars of interest. their proud owners and many many enthusiasts. The began to inhabit the town every first Saturday of the month to showcase their cars to each other and other enthusiasts, gather a crowd, share common interests, have fun and above all energise the Town centre.

Chris Spackman the founder of this gathering explains more….

Car and Bike Enthusiasts – Sturminster Newton’s unique opportunity to satisfy your interest

Back in August 2018 we decided to start a regular event on the first Saturday of the month at the bottom of the Station Road in Sturminster Newton.  It was intended to bring people into the town centre and help local businesses who were struggling to get footfall at the time.

It started with about 8 cars and three bikes, and recently, prior to COVID, it had risen to just under 60 .  It attracts people from as far away as Christchurch and Weymouth, with occasional visits by groups with interests in particular makes – Porsche and TVR are examples.

It’s a very welcoming event – any ages, any interesting car or bike (we’ve had bikes and cars from 1904 through to recent supercars).  You can come along and just see the vehicles and talk to the owners if you don’t want to bring one.  The owners are more than pleased to show you their pride and joy, to talk about their history, their technical details and how they restored them (once COVID restrictions ease, many will allow people to sit in them too).  The main criterion is that you are enthusiastic about cars and bikes.

Young people who have been working on their own vehicle are particularly encouraged to come along.  It doesn’t have to be anything special, so long as it’s special to you.

Fast forward to 2021, a gathering of 60 vehicles and now we’ve a considerable number of local people in and around Sturminster Newton, and in the wider southwest, who have an interest in cars and bikes who gather on the appointed dates.  They are enthusiastic enough to own for pleasure, restore one, or to just come and see interesting ones occasionally.   We’ve found they are often willing to travel quite a distance to satisfy their interest!

We’ve recently started to do drives afterwards with a pub lunch.  This has helped to create a great community around our interest.  Please come along and meet us on the first Saturday of each month in the Station Road car park in Sturminster Newton between 09:00 and 12:00. You don’t need to register or prequalify, just turn up and we will help you with the rest. Oh and if there is something special we will advertise it widely, here and on other online forum that we are associated with.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Chris
