The North Dorset Countryside Ranger Service is a partnership between Dorset County Council, North Dorset District Council, Sturminster Newton Town Council and Shaftesbury Town Council.

The Ranger team, based at St Leonard’s Chapel in Blandford, aims to provide a wide-ranging service which seeks to effectively promote, enhance and maintain over 750 miles of Public Rights of Way and long distance trails, 15 Nature Reserves, The North Dorset Trailway and the Highway Verge. There are also many opportunities for Volunteering and apprenticeships.

The North Dorset Countryside Ranger Service is jointly funded by the Dorset County Council and North Dorset District Council as well as several Town and Parish Councils through Service Level Agreements to manage their public open spaces and rights of way network.

The broad strategic objectives of all Councils is to provide a framework for the work of the Ranger Service and within North Dorset three main priorities have been identified:

  • Actively conserving North Dorset’s heritage and countryside
  • Supporting the local community
  • Contributing to a viable local economy
